123 Most Popular Free Ebooks from Guternberg

To those who are still unclear on what Project Gutenberg is, it is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to “encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks”. It was founded in 1971 by American writer Michael S. Hart and is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The ebooks listed on this site are totally free, covering all major ebook formats. The only downside of the ebooks here are that they’re not in the best format but still highly readable with all information intact. At the time of posting, Project Gutenberg currently hosts over 60,000 free ebooks.

Fear not though as there’s a site by the name Standard Ebooks which takes ebooks from sources like Project Gutenberg, formats and typesets them using a carefully designed and professional-grade style manual, fully proofreads and corrects them, and then builds them to create a new edition that takes advantage of state-of-the-art ereader and browser technology.
