For some, the word Thriller often associates with Michael Jackson’s album Thriller, released in the year 1982. The meaning behind it and the thriller genre is pretty much similar if you really look into it. Having said that, thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. Alfred Hitchcock’s films are good examples.

Thrillers generally keep the audience on the “edge of their seats” as the plot builds towards a climax. It’s usually a villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome. Long story short, anything that “thrills” you, it’s a thriller, whether it’s a book, movie, audibook or a play. Not forgetting the sub-genres that it carries – legal, spy, action-adventure, medical, police, romantic, historical, political, religious, high-tech, military and many more. If you think that the general thriller storyline is too mundane for you, perhaps it’s time to go deeper and specialize in one.

Some of the thriller classics which you probably have read before include Little Red Riding Hood (psycho-stalker thriller – 1697), The Three Apples and One Thousand and One Nights (murder mystery), The Count of Monte Cristo (revenge thriller – 1844), The Riddle of the Sands (first modern thriller – 1903) and many many more. Ancient epic poems such as the Epic of Gilgamesh and Homer’s Odyssey use similar narrative techniques as modern thrillers.
