Corvus
by L. Lee Lowe

In a slightly alternate world the minds of teen offenders are uploaded into computers for rehabilitation — a form of virtual wilderness therapy. Zach is a homo cognoscens, one of the new humans with startling but as yet poorly understood cognitive abilities who can enter the virtual Fulgrid. Though still a high school student, he is indentured to the Fulgur Corporation as a counsellor. Laura is a homo sapiens. They meet and fall in love across barriers of fear and hatred, exacerbated by Zach’s growing involvement with an underground political movement. There is some mystery as to the fate of his parents, while Laura’s dad is a prominent neuroscientist with the Fulgur Corporation. Lines of loyalty are difficult to untangle, particularly because both have suffered a certain measure of emotional trauma in their early lives. From the very first chapters there is a sense of impending tragedy.

30+ Accessibility Tools, Softwares & Resources for The Visually Impaired

Free ebooks are meant to be read and enjoyed by everybody regardless of physical imperfections, hence why this post is being made, although I must admit that this should be the first post that should be posted here. Having said that, do join me in the journey to increase this list of resources to make it a comprehensive one, to provide and create the proper accessibility channels. I’m sure there are other list out there which covers some of the areas below, but I do hope this post will somehow be a part of the whole effort in making this a reality.

3,700 Free ebooks

Bang me on the head for missing this, but The National Academies Press has a site which hosts 3,700 ebooks that can be read free online. First impression indicates that this is probably another online ebook store judging by the “Items in Cart” text at the top right. However, the books listed within the site are in fact free to be read online. Viewers are given the option to purchase the print / paperback version for a reasonable price.

This site requires that you “register” in order to access the goodies, including  the summary PDF’s,  related podcasts for the title, and many more. Register in this context points to filling up a simple form asking for your email, country and other items which can be done in a heartbeat. Once that’s done, a cookie will be placed in your computer, telling the site that you can now from now onwards download the free ebooks. So don’t worry if you’re under the impression that you have to fill up a page long form just to gain access to the downloadable PDFs.

The ebooks within this site are mostly educational, touching from science, engineering, evolution, biology, computers and many many more. Jump over to this site and check it out.

Librivox – Your Audiobook Heaven

If you haven’t came across of Librivox.org like me, then you’re probably missing a lot of good stuffs. This site evolves around Public Domain works and operates by a group of dedicated volunteers who record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. I applaud them!

Wait, that’s not the best part. Librivox is also aiming to make all public domain books available as free audio books. ALL? For such a noble cause, there’s always room and space for you to volunteer and help them out yourself. If you’re keen on volunteering, click here to know more.

Wait no more and jump on the bandwagon by visiting Librivox.org
